Chicago stories about culture, community, and change

How I became a writer

It started with journaling when I was younger. I would write just to get my thoughts out. Over time, that turned into writing small pieces and poetry for myself, especially during moments when I needed a way to express things I couldn’t always say out loud. Writing became a way to slow down and actually reflect on those experiences. Now, I see writing as both personal and purposeful. It’s something I’ve always done for myself, but now it’s also a way to tell stories, share perspectives, and connect with others.

About

I’m Damian Garcia, a Communications major with a Marketing minor at UIC. I’m interested in storytelling and media. A lot of my work is inspired by the people and places around me, especially living in Chicago.
Through my writing, I focus on being clear, real, and relatable. Whether it’s a profile, feature, or review, I try to capture moments and perspectives that people can connect to. This portfolio reflects my growth as a writer and my interest in journalism and storytelling.
